Attracting Hummingbirds in Massachusetts

Hummingbirds are a captivating sight, with their vibrant hues and remarkable aerial acrobatics. If you're eager to welcome these enchanting creatures to your garden or backyard in Massachusetts, feeding them is an excellent way to do so. In our region, you might encounter various hummingbird species, including the Ruby-throated hummingbird, the Rufous hummingbird, and the Anna's hummingbird.

To get started with feeding hummingbirds, you'll need a hummingbird feeder, readily available at the Bird Store and More in Sturbridge or online. These feeders typically feature a plastic or glass container with a red base and multiple feeding ports. The color red attracts hummingbirds, making them more likely to visit your feeder.

Once you have your feeder, prepare a hummingbird nectar solution by mixing one part sugar with four parts water and bringing it to a boil until the sugar dissolves. Allow the solution to cool completely before filling the feeder, as hot nectar can harm the birds.

When positioning your feeder, select a spot that's easily visible yet sheltered from wind and rain. Hummingbirds prefer feeding in quiet, sheltered areas, so consider hanging your feeder near trees or shrubs. Choose a location that's accessible for cleaning and refilling as well.

Maintaining a clean feeder filled with fresh nectar is crucial for the well-being of hummingbirds. Dirty feeders can harbor harmful bacteria and mold. Clean your feeder regularly by rinsing it with hot water and mild soap, and use a bottle brush to clean the feeding ports. Rinse thoroughly and refill with fresh nectar.

Remember, hummingbirds need more than just nectar for their diet. They also require protein, which they typically obtain from insects and spiders. To supplement their diet, you can offer small dishes of fruit or insects like mealworms or fruit flies. However, exercise caution to avoid attracting unwanted pests.

Feeding hummingbirds in Massachusetts can be a delightful and rewarding experience. By providing a clean feeder filled with fresh nectar and offering supplemental protein sources, you can create a haven for these magnificent birds in your backyard. Enjoy observing their unique behaviors up close while ensuring their well-being with proper care and maintenance of your feeder.
